Last night I went to a restaurant with a two friends. It was a spontaneous idea, not because something had to be celebrated. When we arrived at the “Beregoed” restaurant, there was a pleasant atmosphere. The soft light, the murmur of conversation, and the smell of good food filled the air. We were directed to a table by the window, overlooking the city. The waiter greeted us kindly, but he seemed a bit uncertain. When he took our orders, he also didn’t seem to fully understand what we liked.
Appetizer
I decided to order vegetable soup. Something light and healthy to start the evening. The waiter noted it neatly. He came back with a plate of tomato soup, containing pieces of bacon. I looked at him in surprise, to which the waiter asked, “Isn’t this exactly what you meant?” I explained that I had ordered a vegetarian dish and that bacon did not belong in it. The waiter seemed a little confused and quickly turned around. Not much later he returned with the correct soup, only with an extra-large scoop of cream on top. I kindly smiled and decided to eat the dish.
Main course
Then it was time for the main course. I ordered a grilled vegetable dish with quinoa. The waiter nodded and wrote it down. A few minutes later he returned with a plate of grilled vegetables… and a piece of chicken. He set it down with a big smile: “I added a little extra protein so it’s extra nutritious!” I told him again that I don’t eat meat and asked if he could replace the chicken with something else, such as extra vegetables. The waiter walked away and eventually returned with a plate full of… hummus and falafel. He proudly said, “I thought this was tasty for vegetarians, too!” I looked at the plate and decided to give it a chance. As it turned out, it was delicious! Just not quite what I had ordered.
Dessert
The dessert then really had to make up for the evening. I asked for a chocolate mousse, tasty and simple. The waiter nodded, but came back with a pudding with a crunchy bottom. He said, “This is a delicious pudding, but I thought, maybe you would like something savory to finish?” I patiently explained that pudding contains gelatin. That’s not something vegetarian. The waiter looked concerned for a moment and quickly said: “No problem, I’ll fix it!” A few minutes later he returned with a vegan chocolate ice cream instead of the mousse, and asked: “Isn’t this good?” I decided to smile politely again, as the ice cream is surprisingly delicious and I had by now built up a good mood because of the humor of the situation.
Overall result
Although the evening did not go exactly as I had expected, it had ended up being a pleasant experience. The waiter had clearly done his best, but there were some misunderstandings along the way. I had a nice meal, and my friends and I had a nice conversation at the table.
If I had to judge the waiter? I would say his enthusiasm was unmatchable, even if the menu sometimes let him down a bit! I do wonder now what it would be like to see the waiter one day as a chef, with a very unique twist on the menu.
Side note: “Beregoed” is a Dutch word to explain that something is very good. You can translate it as well as: excellent or outstanding.
