Previously, I tried to play an instrument. Soon I found out that it is not for me. Even though it is still a dream to perform in front of a large audience, I will stick to listening to music for now.
At my house, music boxes dance on the cabinet all day long. It’s a wonder to me that I haven’t had any angry neighbors at the door yet. But if I listen to so much music, I must have some favorites songs? How can I remember them all or ever find them again?
Of course, I can create a playlist. However, then I can’t see what my number 1 music is over an entire year. Then I can’t even make other top ten lists either. As a solution, I registered on the website “www.last.fm” on January 6, 2011. You can link this website to your music program, for example iTunes or Windows Media Player. Every time you listen to a music track, it is automatically registered on the website. For example, I can now tell that over the past 13 years I have . . .
- listened to 2,600 artists;
- listened to 171,000 songs. That’s an average of about 1,096 songs per month!;
- licked 2,900 songs;
- listened to Marit Larsen (No. 1) an average of 9,000 songs, including 433 times to her ‘Solid Ground‘;
- listened to Maria Mena (No. 2) an average of 5,000 songs, including 153 times to her song ‘Money‘;
- listened to Ellie Goulding (No. 3) an average of 4,000 songs, including 187 times to her song ‘The Writer‘.
I like music
For the last three years I have been using another music program – Spotify. My music list on Spotify is still incomplete. I am missing a lot of favorite songs. Fortunately, it is possible to create an export of my favorite music on Last.fm. Unfortunately, it is not possible to import it into Spotify. It is a hopeless task to manually look up and add every song, which I previously marked as a favorite in Spotify. Meanwhile, I also licked new songs in Spotify. The chances of me skipping a song are very high. Not to mention how much time it will take.
As a solution, I first started by making an Excel list. In it, I wrote down every song in my Spotify playlist. In doing so, I noted whether or not I marked it as a favorite in Spotify. This also sounds like a lot of work. There are tools available to create an export from Spotify as well.
As a second step, I imported this list into a database. In the same database, I also imported the export from Last.fm. Since I immediately divided the music tracks in Spotify into playlists by language and genre, I could already make a first selection. It’s just not that easy to read the results. You have to know codes by heart to see the result. For me, that’s not such a problem. But what if other people want to see the same data, how are you going to explain that?

Therefore, as a third step, I created a website that contains these codes. All you have to do is surf to ‘musikk.michavanwissen.nl‘ to see the result! On the page: ‘Gen. → Songs liked on Last.fm’ you can see a list of all the songs I liked on Last.fm. The same list also shows if I have already liked them in Spotify. If not, the result is empty. By the looks of it, I still have a lot of songs to add . . .
As a next step, I would like to add a listing in the database of all the music that is on my computer. Some music tracks cannot be found in Spotify. Sometimes this is because of copyrights. Other times it is because I made a typo while cleaning the music on my computer. Adding it in the same database makes it easier for me to see what mistakes I made.
What is your favorite music? Do I already have it in my playlist? Please let me know in the comment box below. Who knows, maybe your favorite song will soon become my favorite song too!
