My niece Emma came up with a new idea: painting. She recently started taking painting classes and thought I should try it too. According to her, it’s a great new hobby to explore. Besides being creative, it is also a good way to express emotions. I was already beginning to have reservations about this idea. Still, I wanted to give the new hobby a chance. So I went with Emma to her next paint class.
The room was imposing with different colors, pencils and stands. There were several paintings scattered around that seemed a bit peculiar to me. Behind one of these paintings an old, curvy, female approached us. She had long gray hair with far too large glasses on her nose. She welcomed me and introduced herself as Margaret.
Will painting become my new hobby?
Full of enthusiasm, she immediately began talking about each painting that was there. Full of amazement, I kept looking at Emma because I honestly didn’t understand anything she was explaining. To me, it was just a few strokes on a piece of paper. Emma, on the other hand, enjoyed the explanations immensely. She seemed to be enchanted by Margaret and her paintings. What does Emma see in these paintings that I don’t?
After explaining the last painting that was there, I got a paintbrush pressed into my hands myself. Now I had to do it myself. Help! Where should I start? Carefully I dipped the brush into the paint pot and put the first strokes on the canvas. I tried to paint myself. That seemed the easiest solution.
After the class, Emma and Margaret were very impressed with my artwork. I understand now that it is about the passion and dedication you give to painting. Your heart must burn with desire to really want to make something beautiful out of it. That one stroke across the paper can make the difference whether a painting is doomed to fail.
If you ask me: painting did not please me at all. The paint splatters flew around my ears. Green, blue and yellow. It was everywhere but on the painting canvas. I was really afraid my red scarf would get covered in paint. Fortunately, that didn’t happen. No, painting is definitely not going to be my new hobby! I’d rather leave it to the professionals.
